How to make a complex column in dynamics mode?

Making a column in dynamics mode is totally different from steady state mode. If the column to be modeled is a combination of sieve trays, packed bed sections and reservoir tray, it might be very hard to have a good behaviour keeping just one unique column module. Here we present some guide lines susceptible to help building such tower.

1. Identify all different sections of the column (examples:section with only sieve trays, packed beds sections, reservoir tray sections)

2. Model each section as a unique column. For each section, define the characteristics of the trays, enter the side inlet feeds.

3.In the case where there is a reservoir tray, connect the liquid outlet of the column to a vessel (to represent the reservoir). This vessel should have 2 inlets: the liquid from tray above and vapour from section below. In the vessel, define a vapour outlet and connect it to column above.

4. In the case of the reservoir tray and all the pumparound equipments, it is important to specify the height of the equipments in order to have the right flows and pressures.

The benefit of this technique is that one can stabilize each section of a column, and gradually connect the others. The disadvantage of this technique is that the user has to provide intermediate feed temperature and compositions; this shouldn't be an issue if a static model of the column exists because these intermediate conditions are available.
